Somatic Experiencing

Somatic Experiencing is a body-based trauma therapy approach (developed by Peter Levine) that focuses on how trauma/stress lives in the nervous system.

Instead of digging into the story over and over, SE helps clients:

  • notice body sensations (tight chest, heavy stomach, buzzing, numbness)

  • track nervous system states (fight/flight/freeze)

  • release trapped survival energy safely

  • build regulation and capacity over time

A key SE idea: trauma isn’t just what happened—it’s what the body couldn’t complete or discharge in the moment.

My experience

My interest in somatic work began from my own experiences growing up with body image challenges. That journey led me into art therapy and Somatic Experiencing, and inspired my passion for helping others feel more at home in their bodies, and more grounded, more confident, and more connected to themselves. As an intermediate Somatic Experiencing therapist and clinical art therapist, I combine body-based SE tools with creative expression (when helpful) to support nervous system regulation, resilience, and the release of stored stress and trauma. I primarily work with women and teens, and focus on mild-moderate binge eating disorder, perfectionism, body dysmorphia and anxiety.

Who is it for?

Over the last few years, SE became deeply personal for me. It helped me slow my nervous system down in a way that talk therapy alone couldn’t. I learned how to recognize when my body was moving into stress—tightness, urgency, tension—and how to soften it before it took over. Little by little, SE helped me feel calmer in my body, more grounded, and more regulated from the inside out.

It’s especially supportive for people who:

  • feel anxious, overwhelmed, or constantly “on edge”

  • have difficulty calming down once activated

  • experience panic, racing thoughts, tight chest, nausea, or dizziness

  • feel emotionally numb, disconnected, or shut down

  • are high-functioning on the outside but exhausted on the inside

  • have trauma history (big events or more subtle, long-term stress)

  • struggle with body image, eating challenges, or feeling unsafe in their body

  • hold stress in the body (tension, headaches, stomach issues, jaw clenching, insomnia)

SE is not about pushing through or “thinking your way out.” It’s about learning how to listen to the body, notice stress patterns, and gently teach the nervous system that it’s safe to settle again.
